for Birders and Naturalists!

Celebrating 22 Years Serving Birders
and Naturalists around the World!

About...

Running the installers for Birder's Diary and the taxonomic lists on these pages involves downloading and running a program to install the chosen item onto your computer. Each of the major Browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, etc.) accomplish this slightly differently and unless you do this sort of thing often enough, can be confusing enough to cause frustration. This page exists to demonstrate how to perform this task on the three major browsers. Please see each specific topic below for examples.

In addition, with the myriad of anti-virus, firewall, malware and spyware programs that exist  for Windows computers these days, you are likely to be asked repeatedly by each one you have installed on your computer to Allow or Disallow the running/download of the installers. Be sure to always allow, save, enable or run when prompted by these programs. If you fail to do so, the programs may permanently lock themselves against running any of the installers from this site and require significant effort on your part to override and reset them.

After clicking on an installer, if you can't find the download to run it, all browsers support Ctrl+J to open their Download Manager. From here, you will be able to run the installer.

Internet Explorer

Even though one of the other two browsers (FireFox and Chrome) may be preferred by many users, I find Internet Explorer (IE) to be the friendliest when it comes to downloading and running programs off the internet. Since ALL Windows computers come with IE by default, you may want to start IE and come back to this site for the purposes of running the Installers. This was written for the latest version of IE - version 11 - at the time of this writing. If you find you don't have this version or if these instructions do not match what you are seeing, you can upgrade to the latest version of IE for free from microsoft.com.

Once you find the installer you want to run (e.g. Birder's Diary or a taxonomic list), click on the link on the appropriate page. This will quickly display a message bar at the bottom of the IE browser window, as shown below. You may also be prompted by any of your anti-virus software programs on your computer at this point in time; be sure to allow this program to run.

NOTE: If you fail to see this download manager bar at the bottom of your IE browser, press Ctrl+J while your browser has focus to open the download manager window.

Choose Run.

You may also be prompted by any of your anti-virus software programs on your computer at this point in time; be sure to allow this program to run.

After you choose Run, and respond to any prompts by your anti-virus software, the installer will display a window and start to prompt you for installation specifics.

This is generally all it takes to start running an installer with IE. This is generally slightly different from version to version of IE. If you find this doesn't match your experience, please let us know by sending email to support@birdersdiary.com. Please include your version of IE.

FireFox

FireFox is a free browser provided by Mozilla.org. Many users use this browser on Windows computers. These instructions are for the latest version of FireFox at the time of this writing: version 26.0. If you are not at that version, go to Mozilla.org and upgrade to the latest version please.

Once you find the installer you want to run (e.g. Birder's Diary or a taxonomic list), click on the link on the appropriate page. This will quickly display a popup message prompting for Save File or Cancel, as shown below. You may also be prompted by any of your anti-virus software programs on your computer at this point in time; be sure to allow this program to run.

Choose Save File.

You may also be prompted by any of your anti-virus software programs on your computer at this point in time; be sure to allow this program to run.

After you choose Save File, a green download arrow will display in the upper right corner of the Browser window as shown below.

Click on that arrow to display a list of recently downloaded files. In here you will see your installer. Click on it to start the installation, and respond to any prompts by your anti-virus software, the installer will display a window and start to prompt you for installation specifics.

Chrome

Once you find the installer you want to run (e.g. Birder's Diary or a taxonomic list), click on the link on the appropriate page. This will quickly display installer, by filename, at the bottom left of your browser window, as shown below.

Click on the filename button (Not the dropdown arrow at the right) to run the installer. You may also be prompted by any of your anti-virus software programs on your computer at this point in time; be sure to allow this program to run.
