    I uploaded version 5.0

I periodically get "runtime errors" that cause the program to close prematurely.  When this occurs, all of my desktop icons are rearranged when I next start up my computer.

    Hi JPK,

What build of V5.0 are you running? It is in the title bar of the main window, upper left.

What version of Windows are you using?

Nothing in Birder's Diary would ever rearrange icons on your way desktop. I would highly suspect Windows issues or a virus.

    Let me know please.

Also, you mention various runtime errors. Can you please give an example of one or more of these?

This also indicates a probable instability with your operating system (e.g. Windows).

    fyi

    Jeff:

Only mentioned the icon rearrangement as I got a stop code error message that caused my computer to reboot.  I ran all the diagnostics that Microsoft suggested.  When that failed, Microsoft suggested that it could be due to any recently installed programs.  As the problem started immediately after I installed the updated version of Birder's Diary, I thought this might be related.  In addition, I couldn't install the update without disabling Norton.  Don't know if this has anything to do with it.

    I'm using Windows 10 and using V5.0.18

I see that V5.0.25 is now available -- assume that this might be the fix?  If so, I'll probably have one of your techs help me install it properly.

I've gotten several run-time errors.  The most recent one was "1004: This object has no title."

    Thanks, hope this helps.

    JPK

PS:  Do you know when IOC and Clements 2017 will be coming out?

    Hi JPK,

There is little doubt in my mind that your have system instability. BD is installed on thousands of computers around the World without any problems. The errors you mention and a system reboot clearly point to system instability, which could be a virus or system corrupt files on your disk or any number of other reasons. But you will very likely need to reinstall Win10 to get back to square one.

It is normal that Norton may need disabling to install BD. The latest version of BD will not fix this issue.

I am happy to get onto your computer and have a look, but there is little doubt in my mind that this is NOT a problem with BD.

    Let me know.

IOC/Clements 2017 due out by end of November. Sorry for the delay.

    Jeff:

OK.  Thanks.  I'm going to run some diagnostics and if they fail to fix the problem, will reinstall Windows 10.

Once updates are available in Nov, I'll install those as well.

Will notify you if I have any further problems.

    Thanks,

I cannot even get BD to open properly after initial installation. I see the splash screen with chirping bird, with message that the database is being updated, followed by a hard stop with a Run-time error '3197' error. Once I OK that, the program shuts down.

This is a new computer running Windows 10, and there are no registry fallback positions prior to the problems that I am having. Other than the file that BD uses, Access database programs open and work fine. The only time I have this run-time error is when opening BD. I have tried uninstalling BD, along with registry cleaning procedures, with computer restart and re-installation, but I get the same results each time.

    HI Dennis,

Very sorry for this problem. We will figure it out and get you up and running.

Can I get onto your computer to see this for myself and figure it out?

Please send email to jeff@birdersdiary.com to arrange a time when you can be at your computer to let me on.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Jeff:

Continued to have previously mentioned problem with various run-time errors, computer shutting down spontaneously and rearrangement of icons, Birder's Diary crashing when I tried to edit entries etc...

Finally, I ran  Norton Diagnostic which removed the updated Birders Diary version 5.  I've now been using version 4 with no problems for 2 days.

However, now -- even with disabling Norton -- I can't reinstall Birders Diary version 5.

    Suggestions?

    Hi JPK,

I don't think I have any advice that you are going to like. If it were my computer, this is what I would do, in this order.

    1. Check for hardware issues, if none found, continue to #2.
    2. Save a copy/backup of BD and other important data to an offline storage (e.g. memory stick , etc.)
    3. Format and reinstall Win10 onto your computer.
    4. Get rid of Norton and any other anti-virus programs on your computer. ONLY use Microsoft Windows Defender.
    5. Install v5 of BD and restore your database.

This will fix a software issue, OS instability or Virus issues. However, this could be a hardware issue, in which case none of the above is going to solve the problem.

Do you have a qualified computer repair place that you trust and have used before. I get mixed stories on GeekSquad, but that may be your best bet. Describe to them your symptoms and see what they think. They should first do a check for hardware issues; and if no issues are found, then follow my advice above.

You said you were running Windows10, but you didn't say what type of computer/maker. Not that that should matter unless it is something out of the ordinary.

Do you have another computer you can run BD on in the meantime?

Let me know please either way.

    Jeff:

OK. Doubt hardware -- this is a newer ASUS that is less than a year old. However, anything is possible. If it were a hardware problem, though, why would there only be a problem w/ BD?

In any event, will proceed with above as I can -- getting ready to leave for Thailand shortly. Might not get to all of above until Dec.

    Will keep you posted.

    Hi JPK,

Yes - hardware can be dead on arrival. So don't rule that out ever.

There is not ONLY a problem with BD. BD doesn't shutdown your computer and rearrange your desktop icons. I feel very strongly that this is a systemic issue (hardware or operating system) with your computer. I could be wrong of course, but hard to troubleshoot while Norton is misbehaving and disabling BD. You might talk with them first if you can get support out of them.

Again, I won't leave you hanging, let me know if you have any other ideas that you want to bounce off me. I can even get onto your computer and check event logs, hardware errors, etc. But we will need to completely disable Norton for that time.

    Let me know.

    Jeff:

I've just had another icon rearrangement! I've ran hardware diagnostics and nothing has come up with the hardware. The only thing that came up is a possible "corrupt cache in windows store apps." Diagnostics couldn't fix this, and referred me to "helpmsg 2182" which is suggesting to either perform a Repair Ugrade Using the WIndows 10 ISO file, or to reset Windows Update Components.

I'll do this when I have time.

In the meantime, I've decided to transfer BD to my laptop. I've installed the latest update version, however it tells my activation license has expired and I need to increase it to activate the program. How do I get another activation license for my laptop?

    Thanks, JPK

    Hi Jim,

Absolutely certain that BD is NOT causing your icon rearrangement. I agree with a Windows Repair operation. This should resolve OS instability if that is the problem. But won't fix a virus issue.

I have reset the activations on your licenses. You are good to go there.

Let me know if I can assist further,

    Jeff
