I have Birder's Diary 4.0. I just purchased BD 5.0 (and 3 taxonomies) and downloaded BDV50-nwsetup.exe per the instructions using Google Chrome. When I click BDV50-nwsetup.exe, the Birder's Diary logo temporarily appears and then I get the following message.
"ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS REQUIRED"
"APPLICATION REQUIRES ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS TO OVERWRITE SOME OF THE OLE FILES. PLEASE LOGON WITH AN ACCOUNT THAT HAS ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES AND RERUN THE INSTALLATION"
I checked my Birder's Diary program to verify the installation didn't take place - it still shows that it is version 4.0.
I get the same message whether or not I have disabled my Norton anti-virus.
Do you have a solution to this problem?
Thanks for posting. This seems to be a relatively new thing in Windows 10. Let me know if you are NOT running Win10.
The only solution I have found is to open Windows Explorer and navigate to your Downloads directory where Chrome likely saved BDV50-nwsetup.exe. Right-click on that file and choose run as administrator. This will start the installation correctly.
Let me know if I can assist further,
Jeff - your solution worked! Thank you!
Sorry about this, but do NOT uninstall previous versions of BD. This message shows - not obvious - on the Add/Remove Programs window...
Re-run the v5.0 installation from the Downloads page.
Restore your latest backup.
And unfortunately, now you will need to import the latest taxonomic lists and go through the reconcile process again; and activate your new licenses.
Do backups at every stage for safety's sake.
Let me know if I can assist with any of this,
Jeff - even though some files got deleted when I uninstalled BDV3.7 and BDV4.0, the rest of BDV5.0 is still on my PC. So I thought I should try to uninstall it before trying to download it again.
However when I tried to uninstall it using the Windows 10 apps uninstall, I received the following message:
"Windows cannot find C:\Birder~1\unwise.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again"
My research shows that unwise.exe is used in uninstalls. Given all the confusing references to unwise.exe, and my very limited technical knowledge, I didn't want to just start randomly trying some of the proposed complex solutions.
How do you think I should handle this? Should I try to manually delete the C:\Birders Diary folder or do you think that poses additional problems?
Thanks! And sorry for not seeing the note about not removing previous versions...and dragging you into this.....
Jeff - another question that pops up is that when I do get BDV5.0 successfully installed and copy in my backup database.mdb, will there be my previous versions of the ABA and AOS taxonomies so that I can reconcile my sightings once I reload the 2017 taxonomies?
Simply do as I stated above, run the Network Installation for v5.0 from the Downloads page on this site. Nothing else.
