I don't often use the time field, but when I do, usually use it to group a batch of sightings. I don't put the time of an individual sighting. I use it like the start time in an eBird checklist. For example, if I started birding at 8:00 and ended up with ten sightings, I put 8:00 for all of them.
I do this when I have multiple outings at the same location on the same day and thus need a way to distinguish them. I could use the Trip field for that, but I don't. I use the Trip table sparingly because otherwise there would be too many entries, and it would be hard to manage.
If I want to record the actual time of a sighting, I'll just put it in the comments. Control-F3 activates the time field, so it gets carried over from new sighting to new sighting.
Thanks for posting. That is a great idea and I appreciate you pointing this out. I think others might find this helpful also.
