Birder's Diary,

Recently I have started exporting my data from Birder's Diary (by CSV file) in order to import into eBird.  However, all the common names listed in the exported csv file are given different common names of a world list, rather than ABA or AOU.

Example:  Black-bellied Plover becomes Grey Plover, Red Crossbill becomes Common Crossbill.

How do I change this so that when I export these files the common names are those of one of the american lists (either ABA or AOU)?

Thanks,

Josh

Hello Josh,

I started work on he document explaining how to do this a couple weeks ago. Obviously, I have not finished it yet.

It started out with doing exactly what you are doing, then I realized what you have now found out: that is, that exporting sightings via the Import/Export feature actually exports internal Diary thing names. These often do not match common names in use. It is more of an internal name mapping for all the tax lists.

So - here are the much abbreviated instructions for exporting BD sightings into eBird.

The solution is to export from the View window. You already know how to use the View Setup window to select the sightings to show in the View window. Then, all you have to do is to select those sightings (use the Select All button, use Microsoft multi-select range process [shift+click or ctrl+click to select a range or individual]), then use the Export toolbar button at the top of the View window to export those records. This will export the visible fields on the View window to CSV format.

Then, you open the CSV file exported above in Excel (or other spreadsheet utility that supports CSV input/output) and get the data into eBird record format. This is documented on the eBird website. Then export the Excel reformatted data back to another CSV file.

Then follow the instructions on the eBird website for importing this file into eBird.

As an aside, your View window must be showing at least the following fields so that they will be output.

  • Common Name (ABA current names required - so will need the latest ABA tax list)
  • Max Count
  • Comments
  • Location
  • Date

As you know, you can create different layouts in v3.6 for the View window. I suggest creating and saving a layout with the above information - call it the "eBird" layout. Then use that when exporting.

Let's start here and let me know if you have any questions. Please report back on your success/failure for completing the eBird import process.

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks as always Jeff....

And, I am looking very forward to version 3.7. Any update as to a possilbe "when" (although I know it is theoretical) would be much appreciated.

Jeff,

I had no problem uploading my data into eBird once I had it in their format. Which really just involved moving a few of the columns around. It was pretty easy and went very smoothly.

The only problem was matching all the correct ABA names after I imported the data.

Thanks again for all your help.
Josh

Hi Josh,

Did you use the Import/Export window to export sightings from Diary - or did you use the View window? The View window will have the correct names on export. The Import/Export window will require some name matching as you found.

Let me know please,
Jeff

Jeff,

I finally tried using the view window and then exported my sightings. Worked perfect..... No name problems.

Thanks,
Josh

Thanks for the update Josh. If you get a chance, I would love for you to report back with the exact procedure you use for uploading to eBird (starting with the export from Diary etc) so that others can learn.

Thanks

Jeff

It's 12 years later and I'm having the same issue. I don't understand the solution as described here.

Also there are "autosplitss" every so often.

Both issues occur in this fragment of the file that was created

"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Ring-necked Duck","","Golden Gate Park","","11/23/1984",1,1,"","F","","","",""
"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Common Crossbill","","Marin County, CA","","11/25/1984",1,1,"Arch Rock","F","","","",""
"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Common Crossbill AutoSplit68873","","Marin County, CA","","11/25/1984",1,1,"Arch Rock","F","","","",""
"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Glaucous-winged Gull","","Marin County, CA","","11/25/1984",1,1,"Arch Rock","F","","","",""
"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Say's Phoebe","","Marin County, CA","","11/25/1984",1,1,"Arch Rock","F","","","",""
"Steve","","Schulz","SS","Lesser Scaup","","San Francisco County, CA","","2/2/1985",1,1,"","F","","","",""

The actual order in the report I'm trying to output is:

Ring-necked Duck

Say's Phoebe

Glaucous-winged Gull

Red Crossbill

Lesser Scaup

Steve Schulz

Oh my gosh Steve. So sorry. I saw this post, had it open to reply to it, and then completely forgot about it as Chrome crashed on me.

You have exported from the File | Import/Export... functionality/window. This exports internal names, not common names. This export is ONLY to be used by the Import feature on the same Window/Tab.

So, my question to you is 'what are you trying to accomplish'? Let me know what you are doing - why you are exporting sightings, and how you intend to use that data; then I can instruct you on how to do what you want.

Thanks and again sorry for forgetting about this one.

Jeff
