We'll be leaving for Northwest Argentina next Friday. Interesting, the iNaturalist download for the whole country is only 500 species out of over 900, but the individual provinces I checked have 370 (Tucuman) to 500 (Salta) species.

The iNaturalist downloads will get us started. We'll only have Internet access at our hotels so VR is out but we can type in others. Please reply here when you get workaround and we can try out any changes you make.

Hi Judy,

I understand your angst. I feel the pain also.

eBird Downloads

I am away on vacation and not back until Tuesday. I have been away for a month.

Once back, it should take me 1-2 weeks to solve this problem.

I should have a workaround with no abundance data available sooner than that.

I notified Cornell/eBird of this 4 weeks ago when the first customer noticed it. I have not heard back from them. They rarely reply, if at all, in less than 2 months.

Unfortunately, BD Mobile will fail every time on the Download for eBird Location functionality. It requires the now non-functional web page for the abundance info.

iNaturalist Downloads

Another workaround is to use the INATURALIST CHECKLISTS tab where you can download by location. It tends to include fewer species that the eBird download. In this case, select a larger area than usual. E.g. Choose 'Colorado' instead of 'Teller County'.

This is the best workaround in your case.

Preload state checklists from iNat.

When in the field, if a name is not present, simply add it to your checklist at that time. Quick and Easy.

Other Options

You can always add names to any checklist during an outing. You can use Voice Recognition for that - or choose "Add Name to Checklist" from the menu. For example,

Touch the Mic icon/button at the top of the checklist to enter VR (voice recognigtion) mode.

Say "Add Name Ostrich"

The add name dialog will appear with "Ostrich" in it. Click Ok.

The name will be added and the list will be scrolled to that name ready to be checked off.

Caveat: requires internet access to use VR.

Go ahead and give this a try right now for a couple states, let me know what you think.

Let me know if I can assist further and help brainstorm until I get back to my office and can make changes.

Hi Jeff,

Yuck!

The example I gave you was for a hotspot, but on our birding trips, we typically download a checklist for each state or province. The latitude/longitude method only covers at most a radius of 50 km and only birds reported in the last x days. Along with the common birds, we will be looking for the hard-to-find birds that might not have been reported in that time frame. The other problem is that we won't have mobile access in the field and may cover quite a bit of ground in a single day.

Is it only abundance information that you can't access? We don't need the abundance info if leaving that out is a viable short-term fix.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for posting.

Unfortunately, eBird recently changed its website and added new anti-bot protection. That now blocks the automated access Birder’s Diary Mobile was using to download eBird location checklists and abundance data. So this is not a problem with your phone or your Birder’s Diary setup.

For now, in BD Mobile you can use eBird Checklists → Download Checklist for Current Location. This builds a checklist from recent eBird observations around your current coordinates using the radius and number-of-days settings.

You can override the Lat/Lng coordinates to include any location you want instead of just your current location. To get the coordinates for any location on Earth, go to maps.google.com, find the location on the map, then right-click the exact spot. The latitude and longitude will appear at the top of the popup menu, for example
39.7392, -104.9903
. Click those coordinates to copy them, then enter the latitude and longitude into the corresponding fields in Birder’s Diary Mobile.

The downside is that this method does not provide the eBird seasonal abundance graphs that the previous download did.

I am working on finding a replacement for the old eBird functionality, but at this point eBird's supported API does not provide the same abundance data that the old method supplied.

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can assist with anything further.

Hi Dave,

As I said, I got stuck trying to recon Clements 2022 to Avilist 2025 because it wanted to change my Herring Gulls to European Herring Gulls. I know that is not right. I figured the problem was trying to jump over a tax update.

It just gave you 'European Herring Gull' as one probably choice - because it wasn't coming from the previous year, but rather 3 years prior. You can and should override that probable choice using the dropdown at the bottom with AviList's American Herring Gull. You did not have to go from 2022 to 2024 first, then from 2024 to AviList second. But either way works fine.

In the pre-Reconcile backup, there are TWO sightings for Muscovy Duck for 05/11/2024 01:23 PM for that date/time/location. On has the IUCN field = LC-, one has "-". What does that mean? I don't know why I have two records for that bird. This is under Clements 2022. Under Clements 2024, only the one with LC- shows.

In Avilist 2025, the one with "-" is now Ruddy Duck jamaicensis. I guess I want to change it back to Muscovy Duck. The one with LC- still shows as Muscovy Duck.

We are getting to the point where I would need a copy of both your pre-reconcile database and your current database to track what has happened and what changes have been made.

You can Zip/compress and upload each to me on this site at the Suppport >> File Upload page. Instructions are on that page. It is fast and easy. Then I can see every detail to answer 99% of all questions.

Without those files, I would be guessing and probably wrong. I am curious, so please if you have time, do upload both to me.

But if I put Old Clements 2022 and New Avilist 2025, it says there ARE things to reconcile, but I guess I am supposed to ignore that. Right?

Yes. That is correct.

Let me know please.

Hi David,

Thanks for the details. I checked everything over, and it looks good.

There is just one thing you need to fix. Review your Ruddy Duck sightings using the AviList 2025 taxonomy only. You should find the one sighting that was accidentally changed from Muscovy Duck to Ruddy Duck. Edit that sighting and change it back to Muscovy Duck. That should take care of it.

Also, you could have reconciled directly from Clements 2022 to AviList 2025. The AI interface in Reconcile would have been especially useful there because it could have shown you the taxonomic changes between those two lists.

But the way you did it—Clements 2022 to Clements 2024, then Clements 2024 to AviList 2025—is perfectly fine as well.

So, other than correcting that one Ruddy Duck sighting, everything looks good.

Take care.

It didn't show up under Avilist. Once I viewed the sighting under Clements 2022, I could change its location and then I could delete the location. (It was a recent sighting too. How it got to be Clements 2022 in the first place, I don't know.)

Anyway, everything was supposed to be on Avilist 2025 now, I thought. But now I see there are many Clements 2022 sightings left over. (As you know, earlier I had reconciled Clements 2024 to Avilist 2025.)

So, I tried to reconcile the sightings to Avilist 2025. I wasn't having much luck. (I got stuck at Herring Gull. It wanted to change to European Herring Gull, but it should be American Herring Gull). So, I reconciled to Clements 2024 instead, thinking I could then convert to Avilist 2025. And it did it, in one fell swoop, even though that was not my intention.

But before I did that, I manually did the first thing on the list, reconciling from Clements 2022 to Avilist 2025. It was Muscovy Duck. And I might have done Ruddy Duck too. But now somehow I seem to have ended up reconciling Muscovy Duck to Ruddy Duck, according to the report. I don't want my Muscovy Duck sightings to say they are Ruddy Duck! But I still seem to have the Muscovy Duck sightings that I am supposed to have (3). I temporarily restored back to my pre-reconcile backup to confirm what the sightings should be.

So, what happened? Am I good? I am sending the report by email.
