[Solved] BD will not open

I have a major problem. After some major system work revising my backup and storage system, I tried to open Birders' Dairy - the newest version installed less than a month ago (6/8). I received this message: "Could not find file C\:Birder's Diary\data\database.mdb. Please copy a backup file into this directory and rename to 'database.mdb.' Restart Birder's Diary."

I watched the tech work on my system and believe he didn't come close to the BD directory, but somehow my database appears to be gone. A complete search of my hard drive did not produce such a file. Perhaps file file was lost when my data files were transferred to the Microsoft OneDrive cloud.

I did try some routines on my own. My BD data folder contains the following files: (1) database.mdb_save, (2) database_v36_bck.mdb, and (3) database-preInstall.mdb. The main directory also contains this file: database_v36_bck.mdb.

What I tried to do on my own was to rename the database.mdb_save file as database.mdb. I thought this file, dated 6/7 with 103,145k, might contain my database. This operation, however, did not work. I got a DLL error message and was asked for a password which I couldn't supply. So I restored the original filename to the _save file. Actually, I did my last bird entry on 6/9, and so I see now that this file probably does not have my birding data.

However, perhaps there's hope. The BD v36 back-up file (75.220k, date 6/8) probably has all my birding data up to when I bought and installed the most current version of Birder's Diary. I'm afraid to go further, however, because I'm deathly afraid I'll do something wrong and lose more than 30 years of birding records!

Please help. Although I'd like my complete records as of 6/9, I don't mind having to reenter the latest records from the previous month that I entered on 6/9.

If here's any critical information that I've left out, please replay and let me know.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Lew

Hi Lew,

Um, yep. Something is wrong.

Good call not doing any more destruction and getting me involved early.

Can I get onto your computer tomorrow sometime and get things working for you?

Please send email to me at support@birdersdiary.com to schedule a time.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I was hoping you'd offer to do that! I'll be home early in the day but probably leave mid-afternoon for a holiday outing with my daughter. I'm in the Pacific time zone. Don't know where you reside, but hopefully we can connect. I'm not sure how urgent this issue is, other than I cannot plan to do any entry until BD is functioning normally again. Please let me know your druthers, and I'll try to accommodate. I'm thankful that you're willing to help me.

Of course Lew. Shoot me an email to Support@BirdersDiary.com.

Include your phone number there. Please no phone numbers here in the forums.

How about 8am your time?

Waiting for your email.

UPDATE: Got onto Lew's computer this morning, and thankfully he had a backup from April of this year. So not too much data lost. Reinstalled v5.2 to get that working by simply downloading and running the latest installer; this usually corrects invalid installations. And restored from his backup file.
