On 3/1/2021 I printed out a check-list for the Lesser Sundas using IOC 10.2. Everything seemed fine. Now that I am actually going there in July, I tried to print out an updated version using IOC 11.2. Hummingbirds appeared! There are no hummingbirds in Indonesia! So, I tried IOC 11.1. Still hummingbirds. So, I went back to IOC 10.2. Still hummingbirds. There were no hummingbirds on the check-list in 2021, so something has changed since then. (Using BD 5.3 Build 19). The rest of the check-list seems correct, but it may contain other errors. It's hard for me to know.

What's going on and how do we fix it?

John

Hi John,

And thanks for posting.

Interesting dilemma, but the fix is easy.

Please follow these instructions from your Users Guide to correct the data for Lesser Sundas. These same instructions are in Video Tutorial format here.

Let me know if I can assist further with anything.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the quick answer. I used Checklist Editor (for the first time) to remove the 8 errant hummers (Fiery Topaz, Royal Sunangel, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Bahama Woodstar, Inagua Woodstar, Mexican Woodnymph, Blue-vented Hummingbird, and Steely-vented Hummingbird) from the Lesser Sundas checklist. Some of the subspecies of these hummers were assigned to the mysterious location "Leti" which is a very small island in the Lesser Sundas. The rest of the locations for these hummers seem reasonable. I don't know if some other location was intended, or if these 8 random hummers have been introduced to this small island (seems unlikely).

Hi John,

That would work also, but I do recommend updating your checklist with the latest info from the Avibase Checklist for Lesser Sunda here via the instructions mentioned above in my last post. This will ensure the most up-to-date accuracy for your upcoming trip.

Have a great trip.

Hi Jeff,

Well, I didn't. But I'll check the checklist with the Igoterra checklist when I get it. I did remove 32 other suspicious entries, however, all South or Central American birds: 2 trogons, 1 toucanent, 1 Antwren, 1 wren, 1 gnatcatcher, 2 seedeaters, and 24 (!) Tanagers! In Indonesia! Most were listed as occurring only Leti, a couple also on Alor (which at least is an island of reasonable size) and a couple also on Flores, which at least is an actual birding destination. I do wonder how this happened, that ~40 species were added erroneously to the checklist.

Hi John,

I definitely recommend updating the bird checklist in BD for Lesser Sundas against the AviBase web page I referenced above. It is quick and easy.
