[Solved] Copy comments text

Why can't I open a sighting, highlight the test in the comments field, hit Ctrl-C, and paste that to another sighting? When I try, I get a bunch of fields, such as this.

"Cnt":"0", "Name":"Brown Thrasher", "Latin Family":"Mimidae", "Band Code":"BRTH", "English Family":"Mockingbirds and Thrashers", "Scientific Name":"Toxostoma rufum ", etc.

If I paste into a text file, I get the comment text I expect. If I copy THAT and paste THAT into the comments, and I STILL get the fields, not the comments.

I wanted to do this because I found I have duplicate sightings. One I entered manually (that has the comments) and one that came in from the app. I will work around it.

Hi David,

Hmmm, the first time I tested this, I got what you got, the current row's data in JSON format (e.g. "name":"value", etc.). But now I can't get that to happen anymore. I have been trying for 20 minutes!!!

I was putting the SQL Query into the copy buffer when you press Continue from the View Sightings Setup window. But that goes away as soon as you put anything else into that buffer.

I have tested now several times; exiting BD, opening new queries and this always works.

  1. Right-click on any sighting and choose "View/edit this sighting comment"
  2. When that window comes up, select the text and press Ctrl+C
  3. Exit that window
  4. Now edit another sighting the same way as #1 above
  5. When that window comes up, press Ctrl+V. And it works.

If you can reproduce this situation, please give me key-by-key and mouse-by-mouse actions to reproduce on my end.

Thanks,

Jeff

@jeff

That procedure does not work for me.

Here is what I did:

Double click on outing
Continue
Right click on a sighting
Select View this sighting Comment (a feature I didn't know existed)
Dismiss the feature tip that appears
Highlight the text
Control-C
X in upper right
Right click on another sighting
Select View this sighting Comment
Click in box
Control V
I still get the fields

Ah. David, which version are you running? Are you still at v5.1.x?

I think I made this change in v5.2.

It works correctly every time with v5.2.8.

Let me know,

Jeff

David,

Is this still a problem with v5.2.8?

I have 5.2.9 now.

The copy comments function is fixed--sort of. The trick is you have to copy the comments using the window that appears when you right click on a sighting line and select View/Edit The Sighting Comment. This is not intuitive because you have to know the trick. If you try to do it within the sighting, you get those fields. So, where in the instructions will this be documented? It would be a bear to even try to explain it, and where would you put it? Tips and Tricks?

But once you do the trick, yes, you can paste either in that window or the regular sighting window.

How else would you copy the comments? You do have to bring up the View/Edit Comments window in order to copy them first.

I don't know what this means. Can you please explain and put it in terms if exactly what you are clicking and choosing and entering.

Sorry for being dense, I am just having a hard time following.

The Edit sightings window has a text box for comments. That is what I mean by "within the sighting". When I tried to paste into THAT text box, I got the fields.

Oh, but hey! I just tried to copy from the Edit Sightings comments box and paste into another sightings Edit Sightings comments text box, and I did not get the fields! It seems I don't have to use the View/Edit The Sighting Comment!

That is the intuitive way, in my opinion.

That should no longer be happening. If it is, please let me know and how to reproduce it.
