Dear Jeff,

I'm sure there's a way to do this but I can't find it so I thought I'd give you an easy one to answer for a change.  How do I produce a list of countries and regions where I have been birdwatching, along with the number of species I have seen there, ideally grouped by region?

As I said:  an easy one!  But thanks anyway for the help.

All the best,

Graham

Hi Graham,

There is a Special Report for this in the Report Designer - Special Reports Tab.

Start with a level of "3" and adjust up or down from there to determine the level of locations that this counts.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Dear Jeff,

Thanks.  I wondered whether this was the one I wanted but it crashed twice yesterday and I wasn't sure.  Maybe I had the settings wrong - I don't remember being able to select the number of levels, for example.  I'll try to check this evening.

All the best,

Graham

Crash! Yikes and GACK! If that happens again, be sure to let me know what version of BD you are running and paste a screenshot of your report setup for me please.

Also a screenshot of the error message.

Let me know either way please.

Dear Jeff,

It didn't actually crash but it hung and I gave up waiting after about 20 minutes.  Maybe the problem was that I didn't realise what "levels" meant and left the value at 0.  I corrected it and the report ran fine.

Another problem, though.  I promise that I selected "count all species" but the routine only seems to count ABA species:  my world list is vanishingly small.  I could send a screen shot to prove that I entered the parameters exactly as in your screen shot (except that I am using the new IOC 13.2 taxonomy and obviously my observer name).  I'm using 6.0.46.  What am I doing wrong?

All the best,

Graham

Yes - a setting of zero would attempt to build a report for all locations. And depending on your location hierarchy, that could take a while. A level of 1 to 4 is generally better.

Hmmmm. Which template did you choose on the left?

But in my testing of this very old, rarely used report, is that it isn't getting all of my non-ABA sightings either. The taxonomy dropdown seemed to be a bit wonky and I had to reset it to Clements, but still it didn't count all sightings in Peru for me, for example.

Hmmmm. This report doesn't look right. Let me dig into it. Marking this as NOT solved.

Yikes. This report does not seem to be working as designed or as expected.

These Special Reports were written by another developer from way back in v3.0 days. He since left the effort, but these reports have remained as they seemed to keep functioning. The code is complex and I really do not want to tackle it.

So, we need to figure out how to replace these 2 reports.

First, let's focus on the Hierarchical (Location/Sublocation) report. And then we can move on to other options.

I am closing this and moving the discussion to the WishList forum here. Please give me feedback there. I will update there with progress.
