[Solved] Error executing install for BD 5.3

Hi Jeff, I have been trying to upgrade my copy of BD 5.3 to get the latest build. But when I run the install program I get the error shown below in the screen shot. Despite the error message it seems like the install program is still downloading but I am not sure what is going on, so far it has not stopped

Hi Tony,

Thanks for posting and for the screenshot.

Normally, if I saw this I would say that you are having internet connectivity issues. However, this is the same sort of problem I was having with my host provider about a month ago. But that all seems to have been fixed a month ago.

So, please abort and restart. Let me know if it continues.

Also, are you attempting to install the latest 5.3 from the Downloads page here on this site? A different version? Or are you trying to update from within BD running on your computer from the Help | Internet: check for a program update menu?

Let me know about all these things and we will get to the bottom of this.

I have had no other reports of issues with downloads since last month, but that doesn't mean something isn't messed up again now.

Let me know.

Thanks Jeff for your reply. If I Check for updates from within BD, I get an error suggesting I have an internet connection problem (connection to other sites seems fine) or the host server may not be running, etc. If I click on the "Web Page" button within the dialogue box, the Birders Diary page opens, then I  clicked on Downloads and then on "Download Installer"  I get a quick message that it is downloading "BDV53-nwsetup (1).exe", but if I got to the downloads file this strange file is there "Unconfirmed 817064.crdownload" with which I can do nothing. If I don't start from within BD, but instead open the browser and go to the Birder's Diary web page, then to downloads and get the installer I get the same result -

An aside: I don't remember it taking a long time to download the installer - no matter how long I wait when I go to close the browser, it says that it is still downloading. My internet speed is pretty good so I don't know what is going on.

Hi Tony,

Do you have Norton antivirus? If so, 99.9% that is the problem. What is your antivirus software?

If you have Norton, the solution is extremely variable and anything from simply disabling it for 30 minutes to you must entirely remove it

I just downloaded the installer from the Downloads page and ran it. It finished without any problems in about 20 seconds. That doesn't mean that my site still doesn't have a problem, but at least we have one confirmed successful installation - and 1 bad one.

Let me know about your antivirus. Let's go from here.

Hi Jeff, I hate to say this but I uninstalled McAfee, the only virus scan program on my computer, but I am still getting the same result.

Tony,

Closing for now due to inactivity. Let me know if you are still having the problem and if we can setup a time for me to get onto your computer to have a  look.

Thanks.
