I am trying to export sightings from New Zealand trip. I can get as far as putting sightings into CSV file and export them but unable to open the eBird window. This error message is shown:

One or more selected sightings are not associated with a Trip.

Start time is set to earliest.

Duration is calculated as the difference between earliest and latest.

I am using Historical. Only date is used, no time element. I have tried repeatedly with Trip field filled in or empty.

Have not encountered this issue with many other exports.

Thanks, Jeff.

Hi Jean,

Thanks for posting.

I am a bit unclear about the order of things as you describe them. I think you only get that message after selecting sightings in the View/Edit Sightings window and then click on the "e" button in the toolbar to open the Export Selected Sightings to eBird Import File window.

This is before you create the CSV file that occurs when you click the Export Sightings button on the latter Export... window.

This message is simply to inform you that it has calculated the Duration based NOT on Trip start and end times, but that because one or more sightings are not associated with a trip that the duration is based on earliest sighting date/time subtracted from the latest sighting. That is all this message is indicating. You can still click the Export Sightings button and create the CSV to then import into eBird.

So, I am really confused on the details here. Basically, the steps are:

  1. Open the View Sightings Setup window (F3) to select which sightings you want displayed on the View & Edit Sightings window.
  2. On the View & Edit Sightings window, select the sightings you want to export to eBird. Simply select one, some or all the sightings in the grid.
  3. Now click on the yellow "e" button in the toolbar of this window to open the Export Selected Sightings to eBird Import File window.
  4. This is where it analyzes the selected sightings and attempts to determine the earliest time and the duration. It does this one of two ways depending on whether all Sightings are attached to exactly one and the same Trip, or not. You get this message indicating exactly what it says.
  5. Now, set the values of this Export window to be what you want. E.g. "Historical", etc. etc.
  6. Click the Export Sightings button

Please let me know where in this set of steps you are encountering a problem. Walk me through your entire process just like I have above, being specific about what you are doing. Then we should be able to clear this up pretty easily.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Jean,

I am going to close this for now due to no response. But if/when you do get a chance to respond, please do so and we will open it back up and address it.
