[Solved] Import of eBird locations with accented letters not displayed correctly

Jeff,

After a recent trip to Mexico, I imported several checklists from eBird that used local hotspots with accented Spanish characters.  Here is an example .csv file from eBird:

Once imported, the accented letter is garbled (converted to two different characters) in Birder's Diary, and that's true in every place in Birder's Diary where a location is displayed.  But an export from Birder's Diary to csv displays correctly in Notepad.

In this example, Zona Arqueológica Uxmal  became  Zona Arqueológica Uxmal.

I think that the displayed location in BD needs to use the Unicode (UTF-8) character set.

I also found an inconsistency between the View Settings Setup and Import/Export Data screens.  If I specify the same Begin and End Dates in View, I will get a day's worth of records displayed.  If I do the same in Export, I get 0 records.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for posting.

Yes, BD uses older technology before UTF-8 became a standard. It is not possible with most of the 3rd party controls in BD to display these chars. With the result being what you have witnessed.

You can leave as is, or edit the location name and change the ó to o manually.

I also found an inconsistency between the View Settings Setup and Import/Export Data screens.  If I specify the same Begin and End Dates in View, I will get a day's worth of records displayed.  If I do the same in Export, I get 0 records.

I will fix this in the next build.

Thanks.

Also, as you have probably already figured out...

  • In View Sightings Setup, it auto adds 12 : 59 : 59 pm to the end date if you don't specify a time.
  • In Export Sightings, you can't specify the time, so it defaults to 00 : 00 : 00 for the date specified. So to get all of 18-Dec, specify 12/18/2021 as the start date and 12/19/2021 as the end date.

Update: The functionality in Export Sightings has been changed to match that of View Sightings Setup in v5.3 Build 12.
