I recently returned from a trip to Australia.

2 mammals were not on the Mammals of the World tax list

Black Flying Fox "Pteropus Alceto"

New Zealand Fur Seal  "Arctocephalus forsteri"

How do I add them

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting. Sounds like a great trip.

  • Black Flying Fox is Pteropus alecto; typo in your spelling and present in the taxonomy.

  • Arctocephalus forsteri is there, with a common name of Australasian Fur Seal.

Try those and let me know please. Thanks.

@magordon Hi Mike,

How are you looking for this?

Try using the Rosetta Stone.

Do you see it there? Then click the Lookup button on the Rosetta Stone window. Now you should see this.

Got it.   What happened is that I searched Mammals of the world with Australia as location and Black Flying Fox did not come up.  When I searched with no location, it came up

Thanks for your help

Mike

Yes Mike, the location data for the Mammals tax list is sparse at best. It is very hard to find sources for proper mammal distribution. This has been a multi-year on-going effort by myself and others to gradually improve it.
