[Solved] Mobile App: bad locations and times

Several of the sightings from a recent outing were tagged with correct locations and times, but others had both incorrect times and incorrect locations.  Could this be because my GPS had not yet locked in on enough satellites?  (Does the recorded sighting time come from GPS?)

Also, in earlier versions of the Mobile App there was a track file in the emailed download, but now I don't see it.  What happened to the track?

Thanks for your patience on this David. Guests left this morning on a 5am flight.

For others reading this, you and I have exchanged some emails and you have run some tests that I requested. I just now also had the time to dig into the code to see what is happening.

This problem is due to having the phone locked, opening it and quickly checking off a bird. This occurs under these situations because:

  • BD only keeps the GPS unit active when the phone is open, unlocked and BD is the active/visible app. This was a battery conservation step.
  • Since your GPS unit is off when you first open your phone, it can take from several seconds to tens of seconds to acquire a valid location.
  • When you check on a row, BD uses the lat/lng and time of the last valid location recorded when BD was active. This may have been many minutes and hundreds of meters ago.

As you have observed, the Track file only contains those valid locations retrieved when BD was active. It does not record points when BD is not active. E.g. it will not record points while the phone is locked and in your pocket.

The best solution for now is to use any of the many, many available apps (e.g. tracking apps) that keep your GPS unit on. This will ensure that your Sightings records contain a recent valid lat/lng and time point. It will not, however, add points to the Track file as BD currently only adds points to its record when active.

The next release (coming very soon) of BD Mobile (v1.28 or later) will change how GPS works with BD Mobile. It will turn on and keep on the GPS unit in your device for complete track recording (along with an interactive map) which will produce valid times and lat/lng points in all situations; e.g. just pulled phone out of pocket and quickly check off a bird.

Thanks for your help and patience with this.

Jeff

Hi Judy,

Thanks for writing and for sharing your comments about the Mobile App for BD.

It is still there. You need to enable sending track info in your email. On the Finish Outing window, click on the wrench icon. There is an option there to send the track info. You can resend your outing by,

  1. Start the App
  2. Click on the Completed Outings button
  3. Select the Outing in question and click on the "eye" button to view it.
  4. Select Finish Outing from the ":" dropdown menu.
  5. Click on the Wrench button
  6. Select "Attach track export file"
  7. Click OK
  8. Click Send and Close
  9. Please send a copy of both the sightings export and the track file to me at support@BirdersDiary.com so that I can see them both.

Let me know which sightings you feel were incorrect.

Several of the sightings from a recent outing were tagged with correct locations and times, but others had both incorrect times and incorrect locations.

As for whether the time comes from the GPS unit or the phone clock, I have to check the code and I am not where I can do that currently.

When you say incorrect locations, do you mean incorrect Lat/Lng or what?

Please send both files to me at address above. We will get to the bottom of this.

Thanks,

Jeff
