[Solved] Mobile track files

Sometimes after importing app files, I get a message that says: "Track files are exported by the BD Mobile App. And are used in the HTML Report. Do you have Track files to Import also?"

If it uses the track files, how does it use it? I tried it both ways, and it didn't seem to make a difference. On the satellite map.

It would be really cool if it actually showed the track on the ground.

Hi David,

First, you have to set the option on the Finish Outing and Submit page before submitting to "Attach Track Export File". Click on the Wrench button on the bottom right of this page.

Now, your email should have both the Sightings Import file and the Track Import file attached to it. Save both files somewhere on your local disk drive.

Now, assuming you have been doing all of this, here is a recent report I uploaded: https://birdersdiary.com/sr/4659753.html

And here you can see what the track looks like: the blue line.

No I am not seeing that. Back in April, I did an outing. Imported to BD. Did the HTML report, but did not see a track.

Now, I learn the trick is you have to import the track file. So, I re-exported the outing from mobile, this time with the track file. Imported that new export, including the track this time (I thought. It did ask if I wanted to do it, and I think I pointed to the correct track file). But I still did not see the track on the report.

To do this, I had to change the name of the first trip and when I reimported, I used the original trip name. Seems like I could do that. But I only used sightings from the new import (with the old name) for the HTML report.

Maybe I will try some new outing in the near future and see if that works.

Just do a simple new test. Start an outing in your house. Check off a couple species and submit both the sightings and track file to your email. Examine the track CSV file on your computer. You should see some lat/lng/time etc fields. Just a few as you probably didn't move much.

Import the Sightings and you will be prompted if you have a Track file also. Import that. Now just generate a quick report for that outing, and you should see what you expect. There shouldn't be any problems as this is working for many folks now. Now you can delete the test sightings and trip from your DB.

I tried it again. I do have lat/long in the CSV file. Imported the track file. But I did not see the track.

Thanks for the update David.

Please do the following:

  1. Open BD Mobile on your phone
  2. Select Completed Outings
  3. Select the Outing in question by pressing on the EYE button.
  4. Choose Finish Outing from the dropdown menu
  5. In the email field, please add "jeff@birdersdiary.com"
  6. Click Send and Close.

I will get a copy of your sightings and track file. Then I can have a look.

I saved and manually imported your Sightings/Track files as such:

Then opened the Sightings in View Sightings, selected all sightings and generated the HTML Report as such.

And here is the Map that was produced.

Oooh! I think I may know what you are missing, and sorry I didn't think about this to begin with.

Are you specifying to Create Trip on Import

The track data is associated with a Trip, and therefore 

  • You need to create a trip to attached the track to on import (sounds like you were doing this), AND...
  • you need to attach this trip to all the sightings (at least one actually) for that Outing.

If you click this setting in BD Mobile, the Trip is auto-created for you and your sightings are auto-attached to it on import; you do NOT have to manually create the trip for your imported sightings. I am thinking that maybe you were not doing bullet #2 above.

All is as you say. Both boxes checked. Trip attached to the sightings. And yet I do not see the track.

I DO see the track in Mobile. A cool feature I didn't know was there until a day or two ago!

I don't necessarily do the first screen shot with the arrows, as BD automatically wants to import the files when I open it. It doesn't seem to matter though.

Well - dang! The mystery deepens.

Ok - please do this. Go ahead and create the report, upload it to the BD website when prompted, and reply here with the URL for the report.

Then I can analyze the file and hopefully see what is going on.

Got your report. Thanks.

There is no track data in your report. So there must not be any track data associated with any trip attached to any sighting, in that report.

I see that you did provide the Trip attached to sightings in the report. That is good.

So, this trip must not have any track data associated with it. 

Quick fix. Pull up the Trip in the Trips window and edit it.

  1. Clear Trip Data
  2. Submit the Outing again from your phone, including trip data and email it to yourself.
  3. Save the Track CSV file to disk and import it to this trip.
  4. Generate the report again.
