I tried the steps you indicated, but I still do not see the track. So, I am at a loss.

Hi David,

We need to setup a time for me to get onto your computer please and have a look at this. It will only take 10 minutes.

But, I am leaving tomorrow for 8 days of birding in the MX central mountains. So, I will definitely be out of touch until I get back on the 27th of June.

Can you please shoot me an email and suggest a day and time after 26-Jun and we will get this figured out once and for all. It has to be something simple but strange. I have no one else talking about this; though that doesn't always mean you're the only one. I have taken your sightings and track import files that you have sent me and successfully imported them and created a map with a track on it. So, this will be interesting to see. I look forward to it.

Til then.

Oh my David. I think I may have stumbled onto the problem.

In order for the Track to be drawn on the HTML Report, the Trips checkbox must be selected when configuring the report, as shown below.

I think that must be what is going on here. I know... not intuitive. So much so, that I never thought of it.

I will look into fixing this in Build 24. But for now, please generate an HTML Report with the Trips checkbox selected.

Let me know.

Update: In Build 24 (coming soon), you do not have to have the TRIPS checkbox selected to get your track data.

The only requirement is that at least one sighting in the report is attached to a trip with Track data in order for that track to be plotted on the map.

Having second thoughts on this change. It makes sense that you have to have the Trip option selected in this report in order to get Tracks shown on the map.

What makes this clear, is that I don't always want tracks to appear. For example, tracks represent Outings (Checklists in eBird terminology, and associated with Trips in BD Desktop).

If your goal is to produce a report showing one or more outings, then the tracks make sense.

But in at least one case, I wanted to show all my Wren sightings in MX on the Map. So, I just want pins wherever I have a wren sighting. The Tracks make no sense in this situation. But now they are always on.

It just makes more sense that if I want track data, then turn on the Trip option in this report; else if you leave it off, then you don't get the Trip and Track data.

Thoughts?

I was going to contact you today to see if we could connect, like you wanted to do last month. But that is neither here nor there now.

I have build 24. It does show the track now (which I have Trips selected or not).

Good work in figuring this out.

I never knew what "Trips" meant in this context, so I ignored it. Why not call it "Tracks" instead?

It has been TRIPS for 25 years before I created the Mobile App. Since a Track is correctly tied to an Outing (e.g. the Trip in BD Desktop), that is the likely spot to attach Track data.

"Trip" in this context is not a trip that you maintain in Trip Maintenance. This is a "track" you followed over the ground, shown in the web report. That's a completely different thing. If I click Trips, it shows me the tracks over the ground. If I don't click Trips, it doesn't show me the tracks.

I think "Track" is the correct term to use for the check box. Before, I didn't understand that "Trips" really meant "Tracks". Since that is what it means, why not call it that?

I guess my best answer for that is, with Trip checked, you get

  • Trip info containing start/end date/time, distance traveled, comments,  etc.
  • And any photos attached to your trip,
  • And track data attached to your trip.

So Trip really does mean Trip in this instance (what you get on the HTML report) and everything attached to the BD Trip (info, photos and track).

That's my best answer. It is not lost on me that there is a bit of ambiguity in here. 😎 🙄 😏

Hmm. I thought you get photos when you click Photos. So, that should be independent of Trips (although I have not tried it.) It does not make sense to get photos when you did not click Photos.

Given what you say, I would have a Trips check box (shows trip information) and a Track check box (shows the track over the ground.)

Keep the Photos check box and only show photos if that check box is checked (whether Trips is checked or not.)

Hi David,

Sightings can have photos. That is what the Photos Checkbox is about.

Trips can also have photos attached to them. Stuff like pics of where you were, the group you were with, the dinner afterwards, etc.

image

So, when you produce an HTML report and choose to output Trip information you will get all the Trip stuff. E.g. comments, start/end times, distance traveled. As well as the Track that is attached to the trip and any photos attached to the trip.

Here is what it looks like on the HTML report, for example.

image

Of course the Track part of it is added to the map along with your sightings.

Is this making more sense now?

@jeff I didn't understand that a Trip could have photos. Then what does the Photos check box mean? I presume photos attached to individual sightings (as opposed to the trip.)

Somehow I thought track was linked to the Trip box in some way. I see that is not true. Track appears both with and without the Trip box being checked. And there seems to be no way to have a map but not show the track.

So, I see no way to not show the track (but also have a map). If you want users to have that option, then add a Track check box. If you do not want that option, then leave it the way it is. I can live with it.

Correct. In UI (user interface) design, it is always a trade-off with space, brevity, clarity, intuitiveness, etc. Always a challenge. The Photos checkbox would be the what-most-folks-expect it to be, the photos attached to individual sightings in the report. With the Trips checkbox, you get your trip section and everything attached to the trip.

I have flip-flopped on this a couple times. As per other post, track was only shown on the map if Trip checkbox was selected. Then, in a recent build, it is shown no matter what. But again, I have switched it back to only print the Track on the map if Trip is selected. This is coming in v6.0.0 and later. Been working on v6 now for a couple months; this is why you won't see a new updated to v5.3 with these changes.

The use case (mentioned in the other post) which caused me to go back to my original thinking, is that I wanted to produce a report that showed all of my lesser ground cuckoo sightings over the years. Those sightings are indeed attached to Trips containing tracks and many other sightings. But the purpose of this report is to simply show when and where I have seen this bird over the years. In this use-case, showing the myriad of tracks associated with each sighting's trip is meaningless; as is the trip info of each trip (many dozens, if not hundreds) would be pointless. I would not want it printed. It is clutter. So, tracks are only shown when Trips checkbox is selected. And in this case, I uncheck the Trips checkbox.

You will have this back in v6.0. Due out in a month.
