Got new laptop, BD transfered but not working. I need to get latest version and license, but want to check that downloading will not delete my sightings. There is a BD file on the new laptop with a data folder which is where I assume the sightings are. What do you recommend as next step. Thanks.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for posting. First, downloading/installing the latest version of BD will NOT delete your sightings.

Please follow the instructions found here for moving BD to a new computer. This should cover all your questions. But don't get stuck on anything. If you are unsure simply post back here with your question(s) and I will happily assist.

Let's start here and please let me know how it goes.

Jeff,

The old computer is long gone. So I will not be moving BD to a new computer, but downloading from your website. Does this change anything?

Hi Marc,

Somehow I didn't see this post. Sorry for the late response.

I truly do not understand the situation you are in here.

If you do not have a copy/backup of your BD database from your old computer, then you are simply going to start anew on your new computer. Install, activate license, and go.

If you do have a copy/backup of your database from your old computer, then the instructions for moving BD to a new computer are valid.

Let me know.

Jeff,

Here's the situation: downloaded latest version and tax lists. Ready to go. Still have BD5.1 on other part of laptop (problem with 5.1 is the buttons at the top, for location maintenance, etc are blank and nothing happens if you press them; my guess is file corrupted or lost during transfer). I do have a backup file, so will restore to 6.1 and report back.

Thanks.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for the update. It might be best and easiest if you let me hop onto your computer and take care of this upgrade for you. I see that you purchased the Annual Everything license. Thanks for that.

I am here most of the day, let me know how I can help. It will only take me a few minutes to get onto your computer and get everything up and running. Let me know.

Jeff,

Thanks for the offer. I did a restore from my backup and everything appears to be ok except for the following message when I open BD:

Error with the Sightings Attachement Directory specification! etc...

Do you think I can fix this? If not and you would like to jump in, anytime today works for me.

Thanks again.

Hi Marc,

Simply use Windows File Explorer (WinKey+E on your keyboard) to create the directory: C:\Birder's Diary\Attached-Sighting-Documents\.

This little video shows how to do it on Windows 11.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Jeff,

Problem solved. Easy! Last question (I hope): what do you call those horizontal "thermometers" that show sighting this year, lifetime and total possible for an area. Mine disappeared from my home page and I would like to set them up.

Glad to be back in business.

Jeff,

Just to let you know everything is now up and running. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: the Reconcile feature is the only reason I have an up-to-date world list. Voted #1 feature by this user.

Thanks for the update Marc. Very glad you find the Reconcile functionality to your liking. I spend many hours tweaking every aspect of that to make it work as well as we all want. Clements 2023, IOC 13.2, ABA and AOS 2023 are almost done. A few more days. Thanks for the kudos! It means a lot.
