[Solved] Oddball purchasing issue
This isn't affecting me any more (see below) but thought I might bring to your attention something odd in the purchase process.
I logged into upgrade to V6, and at the same time figured I should update to the latest AOS taxonomy. I'd assumed I was still on AOS 2020 because that was the "checked" taxonomy on my sightings entry/edit screen, and it was at the top of the list, so I figured I'd missed updating last year. So I added AOS 2021 to my cart at the "upgrade" price (since I have 2020).
The system wouldn't let me proceed because it said I needed a license for AOS 2020 to get AOS 2021 at the upgrade price - but I clearly have that, and my system confirmed it was activated. I was about to take a screenshot to document that when I looked farther down the list and saw, out of order, AOS 2021 was already in place and activated as well, meaning I didn't need to get it.
Still - should the shopping cart system throw the error "you must own X (older version) to buy Y (newer version)" when you own both already? I mean, in a way I'm glad that I didn't pay a second time for something I had already (even though it's worth it and it wouldn't have bothered me any, even to pay full price), but something seems a little askew in the shopping cart verification process for upgrades and which error message(s) it throws.
Thanks for posting and describing in detail your situation.
- AOS 2020 would be at the top of the list and checked simply because it is the last one you had checked/used previously. If you uncheck it and check and use 2021 next, you will find that it is now 2021 checked at the top. Just trying to remember what you use, and assume it is what you will use next.
- The store did not let you buy 2021 at the upgrade price, because you had already purchased 2021, and when you do that, it converts your old 2020 license to UPG status; meaning upgraded to newer version. So the store considers this license no longer eligible for certain things, such as this. It is the rules of the eCommerce site I use, not my own. Of course, the message that you get only adds to the confusion.
I agree, this is not the most desirable functionality in this case. Thankfully, it doesn't happen very often at all and so it doesn't receive that much attention from the eCommerce site to change.
We had another strange one that happened to a customer on checkout yesterday that I've only seen once in 27 years at the eCommerce site. So, I just handle these personally (or in your case, you figured it out) when they arise. It would probably take 20+ hours to change the flow and design for something that happens once in ten thousand times. So, I think they (the eCommerce providers I use) decide it is very low priority.
Thanks for your purchase. I hope you enjoy it.
Do you use BD Mobile for Android? The new Web API Outings submit is a real time-saver.
I have downloaded it, but I haven't actually used it yet. I do plan to test it out on my next birding excursion, though!
