I have a mac desktop that I just updated to macOS Big Sur 11.1.  I updated Parallels desktop and the Windows platform installed on my desktop, where I run Birders Diary.  I want to restore my years of mdb data to the 5.2 Birders Diary, but am not able to open the app. I get this message:

Database Not Found. Could no find file 'C:\birder's diary\data\database.mdb'. Please copy a backup file into this directory and rename to 'database.mdb'. Restart Birder's Diary. I don't know what "this directory" is.

As I write this, I am using Birders Diary 5.1.

Karen Clarke

By the way, I am a long-time Birder's Diary user, but had to set up a new account as the original one could not be found.

We rebuilt our site and moved it to a new host provider back in June, 2020. As such the account info did not transfer. You did the correct thing by simply registering anew.

I assume you have a copy or backup of your database (database.mdb) from your old installation somewhere on a transportable drive (e.g. usb drive, memory stick, etc). You need to have this to move forward. It contains everything.

Now, assuming you have your copy/backup, then do this:

  1. Go ahead and upgrade to v5.2 on your new computer by installing from the Downloads page on this site.
  2. Once that is done, the installation would have placed a demo 'database.mdb' into the "C:\Birder's Diary\data\" directory.
    Rename that file to 'database-demo.mdb'.
  3. Move your backup/copy of your old database into this same directory.
  4. If not already named 'database.mdb' rename it to this.
  5. Now, start v5.2 by right-clicking on the desktop icon and choosing run as admin
  6. When 5.2 starts it will detect a 5.1 database and upgrade it to 5.2 format.
  7. When startup is complete, amongst all the other notice/tip windows will be your licensing window. Click on the Activate button and enter your Annual Everything License

You should be good to go now.

Let me know please,

Jeff
