[Solved] Run-time error 13

I can get into Birder's diary just fine. But for the first time ever, the program would not let me add birds. When I selected "Add" I got the following message: BVD36 - Run-time error '13": Type mismatch. When I selected "OK" the program closed. All other functions of Birder's Diary (View/edit, Observers, Locations, Trips, Reports) work fine. What can I do to continue?

Microsoft released an update last year that rendered all versions of BD prior to v5.0 inoperative.

I am sorry for this, but the only solution is to upgrade to v5.2. The procedure is quick and easy, and I am happy to help. Hundreds of new features, performance improvements, etc.

Let me know if I can assist further with any of this.

Thanks. I have a couple of questions: (1) Can you tell me why the program has operated perfectly until just a few weeks ago? I have downloaded many Windows updates over the past few months, but nothing has rendered BD basically inoperable. (2) Will a newer version of BD accept my current database - more than 715 species - and make it easily usable? I'm aware AOU has revised some names and changed some species, but hopefully the newer BD version will accommodate that. Right? And will the new version keep my trips and lists?(3) How much will the update cost? (4) How may I easily do the upgrade? (5) I'm good with better performance, but I've been very pleased with BD over the years. I likely will not need or want lots of the fancy features, since I basically just want to list and search. Is the new version easy to use?

BTW, I have the World version of 3.6. The program won't let me access the list that tells me exactly what I originally purchased. Perhaps you can help me access the information so I know exactly what upgrade version to purchase. I will want to do a purchase rather than an annual license that needs regular renewals.

You want to get Upgrade to v5.2 Advanced User License here.

I am showing that you have v3.6 Advanced User license and Clements 2005.

I recommend that you should only be using Clements 2005 in that case and if you update your taxonomic list to Clements 2019, then only update Clements, not ABA and AOU as they are subsets and should not be used anymore. Let me know if you have any questions on this.

From here, you can access your Online Store account. If you don't remember your log on credentials, you can request an email reset/reminder.

Let me know if I can assist further,

Jeff

Hi Lew,

1) I cannot tell you that Lew. In fact, I was surprised to hear that the error only occurred during Sightings Entry. For all others, it fails to even start. So this may be a different issue. And now upon further inspection, that error is RTE #6, not #13. So you do have a different problem. This sounds like a Registry issue for the Sightings Entry window. Microsoft changed how that worked over the past 3 decades and each version of BD had to change to keep up with it. If v5.2 does not fix your problem, then the upgrade is free.

2) Yes. BD 5.2 will auto-detect and upgrade your 3.6 database to the latest version. The newer BD will use your existing taxonomy. You will need to upgrade your taxonomic list to get the latest additions/changes. You will not lose any data with the upgrades. All trips, etc.

3) The upgrade to v5.2 Advanced (I see you have v3.6 Advanced) is $59 at the Online Store.

4) You simply download the installer and run it. After installation completes, run BD as administrator (right-click on the icon and choose run as administrator). It will auto-upgrade your database. This process may take 5-15 minutes depending on your computer speed/memory. But if you would prefer, I would be happy to jump onto your computer and do the upgrade for you.

5) The new version has all the basic functionality in the same place. A new facelift here and there, but I believe 95% of everything is still where you expect it. I think it is much easier to use than v3.6.

Hi Jeff,

Help, please! The purchase and download went beautifully. So did the installation. But when I entered Birder's Diary, I see that the new version is not connected to my old database. So my lists, trips and locations, etc., are not connected. I'm sure there is a new database somewhere, but I can't find it. My old one is in Documents\Birder's Dairy. (I'm using MS Windows 10.) Somehow I need to get the old dB into the new folder. I'm so close, but....

Probably it's something simple. I hope you can help.

Thanks,

Lew

Hi Lew,

Hmmm. BD should only be installed under C:\Birder's Diary\.

So, I am assuming that a) v3.6 is NOT installed there, and b) you DID install v5.2 there.

In that case, you need to restore a backup of your database from v3.6 into v5.2. Follow these steps.

  1. Run v3.6 from wherever it is.
  2. Create a backup (File | Backup/Restore) and put it into C:\Birder's Diary\data\ and name it database_v36_bck.mdb.
  3. Exit v3.6.
  4. Run v5.2.
  5. Choose File | Backup/Restore and restore the file above in #2.
  6. Exit BD and restart v5.2. You should see your data.

Let me know please. I can jump onto your computer and take care of this for you if you like.

Thanks Jeff,

I appreciate the good instructions. I was able to do the backup and restore just fine, and my data & sightings all seem to be there. Now I just need to learn how to use the new BD! Hopefully there will be enough guidance in the Support tools to show me whatever I need.
