[Solved] Run-time Error 6: Overflow

For no reason I can discern, today as soon as I opened Birder's Diary (v4.1) I got this error message. If I click anything at all, the program then shuts down. I'm now completely blocked out of all of my birding data - many years' worth. 🙁

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay in seeing these posts. Brand new site went live yesterday. Still have many issues, such as notifications of these new posts getting to me. We will be moving this entire site to a new/much-better host provider on Monday. FYI

Now as for this error: RTE-6. @toddinsf states he is running v4.1, what version are you running @bdawson66? Would it be 4.1 also?

Does this happen at startup always, before you can do anything?

Did your systems go through a Windows upgrade recently? This has been known to cause some issues.

Let's start here please. I am quite sure I can solve the problem. I just need more info.

Hi,

Again, sorry, but you have caught us in a transition to a new web site and new web technology and new host provider!!! Arrgggg. the triple threat. And the move is not going well to say the least. Please hang in there.
I have been assured this should be complete by Tuesday morning. At which point we should schedule some time for me to get onto your computer and have a look at this.

Stay tuned.
Jeff

Ok - I think we have the move completed. Most of the big issues shaken out and most everything working.
Email notifications should be working, so I think you guys should get notified of this post.
Todd, please send an email to support@BirdersDiary.com to schedule some time for me to get onto your computer.
@bdawson66, let me know what version you are running please.

My version is 3.7.122, and I update Windows regularly. I get the greeting from the bird, the error box appears, and it closes abruptly when I click on it. Thanks for looking into this.

This is probably a registry read error. Windows has made many changes over the years to this code. I made similar changes to BD over the years to keep up with it. So I guess that this is due to the fact that you are both at pre v5.0 versions fo BD.

Please send email to me at support@birdersdiary.com so we can setup a time to let me onto your computer to take a look.

Thanks,
Jeff

p.s. are you getting email notifications from the forums now about new posts on this topic?

Ok - got onto Todd's system today. I believe the problem has to do with a Registry read due to all the changes in Windows and how this works and that the version of BD that both Todd and @bdawson66 are using are v4.1 and v3.7. I tinkered around with removing Registry settings for BD but that didn't fix the issue. So I installed v5.1 (Build 101) onto Todd's system and it works fine, as I expected it would.

So, this is the solution. If others are having this problem and you are are earlier versions of Birder's Diary (pre v5.0 probably), then I am happy to upgrade you to v5.1 for free in order to solve this problem.

fyi

Update: Today had our first customer with RTE 6 (Version 4.0) on Windows 7. All previous issues had been with Windows 10. Updating to v5.1 solved the issue.
