Hi Jeff:

Build 30 of 5.2

Several times after clicking to add sightings, I get a very quick message that says something about Overflow issues and runtime 06, and then the message goes and the program closes.  The data appears to be saved, but obviously I am irritated by the program closure.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for posting and sorry for the issue. I have one other customer with this problem. I need to get onto one of your computers and have a look.

I am unsure exactly where and how this problem is occurring. Are you in Checklist or Keyboard Sightings Entry?

image

What is the last thing you do before getting this error? What button do you click, etc.?

Is this reproducible? Can you make this happen every time? If not, can you pin down what is unique about when it happens?

Can you let me onto your computer today so I can have a look?

Thanks,

Jeff

@jeff  Today I tried to open my Birder's Diary after many months.  I got the message "Run time error #6 overflow".  When I click OK on the box, the app shuts down completely.  I have Windows 10, and version 4.0 of Birder's Diary.  What can I do to fix this?

Hi Linda,

Thanks for posting, and sorry for this problem.

This is due to a change in Windows. It affects all versions of BD prior to v5.0. The only solution is to upgrade to the latest version, v5.2.

Let me know if I can assist further with any of this.

Dear Jeff:

I am in Checklist Entry.  It does not happen every time, perhaps 1/3 of recent times and nothing has suggested itself as a correlation to me.  It happens when I have completed a checklist, and I am clicking to add the sightings to my database, and as I noted, the sightings do appear to stick, the crash happening after the data is embedded.  I could let you on.

Hi Richard,

Hmmm. Getting onto your computer is not going to help unless we can figure out a way to reproduce the error every time. If I get on your computer and it works every time, we won't learn anything.

Let's start here, next time it happens, please note the checklist you just entered by date, location, observer, etc. Then when it happens again, do the same. Let's see if that yields any clues and/or actually comparing the two sets of sightings to see what might be in common.

I think that is the thing to do now. Ok?

Update:

One other customer with this problem.

Symptoms are:

  • Seems to happen once per day no matter how many times he uses BD in a day.
  • Has happened
    • Pressing Add Sightings after Checklist Entry
    • Pressing Ok when adding a new observer
    • Pressing Update when editing a sighting
  • Not reproducible
  • On Windows 10

Let me know, Richard, if any of this sounds familiar to you.

I was on his computer and creating a test observer generated the RTE 6 error, but we couldn't get it to happen again no matter what we did with BD. So, he, as you, are keeping a log of what you did exactly each time before it happened, and let's circle back here and see if we can't figure this out.

One other note. I looked at the code behind Add Sightings, Create Observer, Edit Sighting, and cannot find similar foot prints in the code to say that the same thing is happening in the code. So, no help there.

Hi Jeff:

I have done two short checklists.  The first one crashed after I hit "Add Sightings"--I got a box with Run Time Error "6"  Overflow, and after I hit "OK" on that box, it crashed.  The data was saved.

The second one was normal.

Thanks for the update.

So, the second checklist worked without the RTE 6?

Was this the first time you used BD today?

Does this happen every time, the first time you use it each day?

Can you think of anything that this checklist has in common with other checklists that got the error? Location, Date, Observer(s), species seen, etc?

Sorry, but more questions than answers on this one right now.

Let me know,

Jeff

Dear Jeff:

The second checklist worked fine.

The one that crashed earlier today was a list I did for yesterday, so I changed the date (I think the program had been open from the day before, but I don't remember).  The location was the same for both lists.  the observer was the same (only one observer is using the program, so it always is).  The comment for all observations was the same for both.  No trip has been involved.  The second time was also today, and I used today's date, and it worked fine.  I have had a crash a few days ago for only one species entered, I have had it crash with 35.  All of these crashes have comes in the last week or so, shortly after I updated to 5.2; prior to that I was using the program most every day for one to several lists, short to long, without problem, using 5.1.  I have Build 30 of 5.2.  My Windows is 10.0.19041.

I will continue to keep track of what I do.

Hi Richard,

In the idea that entering checklists for dates other than today, I tested that and did not encounter the problem.

I am going to build a special version of BD for you to download. If/when this error happens again, it will write extra info to a log file. Then I will need you to send me the log file. I will send instructions when I have this version of BD ready for you.

It may be tomorrow as I have other obligations today.

Stay tuned.

Ok - and now I have a Debug version of Birder's Diary (Build 31) available here. (Link has been removed as solution found. See below.)

Once you click on the link, it will download a file named BDV52-debug-rte6.zip.

  1. Copy that file to your C:\Birder's Diary\ directory.
  2. Rename your current BDV52.exe file to BDV52-Build31.exe
  3. Unzip the ZIP file and it will extract a file called BDV52.exe.
    image
  4. Now continue to use BD as per normal, this file should be run when you double-click the BD desktop icon

If/when you get the RTE 6 error again during Sightings Entry Checklist (it only checks this functionality, not any place else in the program - fyi), instead of closing BD, it will alert you and ask that you email me the BDV5231.log file. Please do that and we might be able to figure out where this error is coming from.

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff:

I didn't get alerts about these new postings, so I just saw them.  As reported early on, I am using checklist entry with an Arizona list.  Only things sighted before coming up.  Not using speech recognition.

As reported to support by e-mail, hitting the link in the e-mail did not produce a result to download.

Today I opened the program and did a number of "view sightings" searches to prepare lists to export to eBird; these (about a dozen) all went fine with no crashes.  I closed the program and re-opened it later, did a checklist for today with no problem, another one locally, and returned to the first spot and added a couple of birds, all with no problems, and closed the program.

I found the problem! You all started to put me onto the problem when you mentioned that BD had been left up and running, perhaps for more than 12+ hours.

So I started BD last night, and entered a sighting. Then left it running until this morning. Then I attempted to close the Sightings Entry window and got the problem.

Analysis and fix coming today.

Stay tuned.

Build 31 is now ready for download and installation.

Please upgrade to build 31 by

  1. Going to the Downloads page on this site, or
  2. Running BD and choosing Help | Internet: Check for a program update

Thanks for your help in resolving this.

Jeff
