[Solved] Runtime error 48

I am currently running version 5.1 and was trying to clean up my disk and uninstalled version 4.1. I also have version 5.0 as well but I did nothing with it. When I tried to run version 5.1 after the uninstall of 4.1 I got an error message that said it could not find the database so I copied a saved one into BirdersDiary/data and tried to start 5.1 again. This time I get "Runtime error 48 error loading DLL". What do I need to do to get 5.1 up and running again? Why can't I uninstall previous versions that I am not using?

Hi Sara,

Run the V5.1 installer from this site (Downloads | Program) and you will be back up and running.

The uninstaller is not supposed to work, but when it does, it does these kinds of things. Simply remove BDV41.exe. That is the only part of 4.1 that is still on your system. Same for BDV50.exe.

Thanks, Jeff, I got 5.1 installed and it comes up but nothing recent seems to be in the database and my most recent taxonomy, ABA 2019 is not there either. What do I do next?

Hi Rosemary,

My first question is: how old was your backup you restored?

Do you have a more recent file in the /data subdirectory? You might. I create copies in there on installations/updates/backups. Check the dates.

Let's start here.

The database in the /data directory is the one that I copied in from a saved one so it has todays date and time which is just before I sent you the first post so before the installation. Just to be clear, I did not perform a "restore", I just copied it in from a backup.

Correct Sara. What is the date on the file you copied into the /data directory? Where you copied it from...

Are there any other files in the /data directory? What is the date on them?

I can get onto your computer tomorrow and take a look if that helps.

Let me know,

Jeff

the saved database that I copied from is 11/2/2020.

Files in the /data directory:

database.mdb 11/4/2020

database.mdb.bck.copy 11/2/2020

database-preInstall.mdb 11/2/2018

Yes, it would be helpful if you could get on. Locations as well as sightings are missing from the database and my 2019 ABA taxonomy is gone too.

Thanks a lot.

See ya tomorrow.

I just tried a "restore" from Birder's Diary and now all is well. I guess I learned my lesson. So sorry for bothering you with this.

Thanks so much for your quick response.

Hi Sara,

Never a bother.

Not sure how a Restore could have solved this problem for you. Perhaps you found that the Backup/Restore window has the location of your last backup in it and just doing a restore from that got you your latest backup. And that is good and what I would have looked at.

Let me know if I can assist further.

Yes, Jeff, the restore had the path to the most recent backup in the BirdersDiary directory.

Thanks again.
