[Solved] Species order on entry checklist
I'm doing my first batch of entries since your virtual visit yesterday. I'm noticing a difference in the order of species. Has Build 56 changed the order?
I'm remembering that when I used to select the checklist for Oregon birds, the Starling, Crows, Jays, Creeper, Nuthatches, Chickadees and Thrushes were in close proximity on a single screen or two. Now I have to do multiple keyboard selections to find many of these. The Chickadees and Nuthatches are below the Crows, and the Starling well below them, for example. I have checked a few other of my common species and have found similar changes.
Is there a way to restore the order to the way it used to be? I've looked through the Help list but have not been able to find this topic.
I ask because I've developed a very fast entry system over the years so that I can make just a few keyboard selections that bring up a number of my common species on the same or adjoining screens. When I'm entering a whole month of sightings, every few minutes saved helps. I'm sure I can adjust if there's no user control, but I thought I'd ask.
The answer probably lies in your Sightings Entry Setup window.
Are you using Checklist or Keyboard entry methods?
It sounds like you might be talking about Checklist.
Note the Sort dropdown in the picture below.
What is your set to?
This is about the only thing that would affect that other than the Location Filter specified near the top of this same window.
What is that set to?
I don't remember changing anything when I was on your computer, but it is possible.
Let's start here. Let me know what all your settings are on this window please.
As I watched what you were doing on my computer, I do not think you made any changes at all on my Settings Entry window, let alone anything major.
Using your comments above, I did go to the Sightings Entry Setup. Checklist Entry was selected, and Taxonomic Sort.
Just to see what would happen, I selected Keyboard Entry. That produced this message: "No user-defined fields created." So I did Control + U, which produced a window asking me to define all fields. I decided not to proceed, as it felt uncharacteristic. This is something I've never done with BD before.
This sequence makes me feel that I previously did not have Keyboard Entry selected, as I have never done custom-defined fields in my previous usage of BD. I just used the default, which I think must have been Checklist Entry and Taxonomic Sort, and I just got used to what I found with my lists and entry.
Whatever seems a bit different now, I think I will just proceed with the current Checklist Entry and Taxonomic Sort. The difference between what I have now and what I used to have is relatively minor. I'll soon get used to the new normal.
Thanks for your advice and comments. I do like the latest build and expect it to give me lots of help with my birding.
Thanks for the update Lew. But let me know if you want to have a phone chat with me on your computer at some point in the future to go over any of these things with you.
