I am using BD 5.2 build 43.  I am unable to load photos to BD.  If I click on the large plus sign, nothing happens.  If I click on the left most icon to review previous photos, I get the enclosed error message.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for posting and for the screenshot, always helpful.

I have more questions than answers right now.

Have you been able to add photos to Sightings before in BD?

If I click on the large plus sign

Where are you at? What large plus sign are you referring to? That icon is used in at least 3-4 windows in BD.

If I click on the left most icon to review previous photos,

Again, I am confused as to where you are at and what you are doing/clicking-on here. Screenshots of this would be helpful.

Can you open Windows File Explorer and navigate to C:\Birder's Diary\Attached-Sighting-Documents\ and see files?

Might you have the file in question open in another program such as a photo editor?

Let me know here and we can zero in on the problem.

Thanks

Jeff

I have loaded pictures in the past using 5.1.   I have not loaded pictures since I upgraded to 5.2

I click on the camera icon; this is what I see

image

The second icon on the top from the left is a + sign.  I thought that will allow me to load pictures.  If I click on that, nothing happens

If I click on the first icon from the left I get the error message I showed before

If I go to BD/attached-sighing documents, I see some very nice pictures from 2017 but none of them I took.

If I hover my mouse over the "file missing " pictures on the left column, I see the name of the bird and the file Number of he photo but no picture.

Are the pictures supposed to be stored in the attached sighting-documents file?

I reorganized my picture files on my computer a few weeks ago. I thought the picture files were stored on BD.

Bingo! Yes, the photos attached to BD Sightings are stored in \Attached-Sighting-Documents directory. If you move them out of there, then BD cannot find them.

Can you easily move the missing/moved photo files back into this directory?

If you have all your photos in another directory, you can easily repoint where BD looks for your photos in View | Options, MORE Tab

Let me know how I can help. Your correct next step depends on where these files are now and how easy it is to move back.

First of all, I never accessed attached sighting documents file and I never moved any photos from that file

I was able to find some of  the pictures and copied them back into attached  sighting document file but I still get "file missing" after clicking on the camera icon.

I still am unable to load new pictures after clicking camera icon and + icon on the top row.

I would like to delete any old photos from BD and start over.  How do I delete photo file that are empty and start over?

I don't understand this statement Mike. If it is important, please expound a bit.

Yes - clicking on the camera toolbar button in the main window toolbar will show all sightings attachment photos starting with the latest and working in reverse chronological order. If you have not restored those latest files to the proper BD directory, then this is what you will see. Any file referenced by a sighting that is not in this directory will show "File Missing".

If you select a file from the tiles on the left vertical column you can see what filename it is looking for; as shown below.

Ah - now I understand how you got here. If you notice, when you click on the camera button in the main window toolbar, the "+" button in the View window is disabled (e.g. grayed-out). It is non-functional here as there is no selected sighting to add a photo to. It has always been this way. You would add additional photos to an existing Sighting when Editing that sighting. Or you add photos during Sightings Entry.

Wow! Good question. No one has ever asked for that one. And it wasn't designed with that in mind. The process would go like this...

  1. Select all Sightings that have registered attachments/photos.
    You do this by
    1. opening the View Sightings Setup window (F3)
    2. Click on the Clear Data Filter button to clear all previous settings
    3. Check the box to select sightings with attachments
      image
    4. Click Continue
  2. Once the View Sightings Grid comes up, it will contain all sightings that have registered attachments/photos.
  3. Select all Sightings (or just a few at a time) and click on the camera icon in this window's toolbar to view/delete these attachments.
  4. One-at-a-time select each photo and press the Delete ("X") button on this window. Repeat.

Let me know if I can assist further with any of this please.

Thanks for your help

OK  Making progress.   I was able to delete the empty files. I had forgotten that the photos were entered through the sightings window.

I have entered back some of the photos.  I did get the following error message after entering one photo

image

Also if I click on the camera icon on the tool bar, the new photos are present but I have been unable to show the photos on the home screen after doing Control Y

Hi Mike,

You can forget that error. It is an error with Windows, but the photo should have added. The error comes when trying to display the photo you just added and Windows reports that its graphics code is out of memory. If you closed and reopen that Display window, you should see the photo just fine. Let me know if that is not the case.

As for being able to show the photos on the main window (BD home screen) with Ctrl+Y, it may be because you shrunk the window pane that displays the photos. Do you see a red bar as in the photo below?

image

If so, hover your mouse over it and it should turn into an up/down arrow. Now drag the pane down.

Let me know,

Jeff

Fyi: the sizing of the 4 panes on the main window is covered in a video tutorial available under Help | V5 New Features Video

After I rebooted BD, all the photos were present.

Thanks again for your prompt responses to my questions
