When i copy a text checklist from ebird into the copy buffer than click on the button 'get the latest checklist data for this location' and click on Update from the copy buffer it runs for a few seconds and then no sightings are added. What's the problem? I've tried this numerous times to no avail.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for posting. I am going to need some more info on this so that I can respond properly and get you going.

What version of BD are you running please?

Where you are getting this data; e.g. give me a URL (web address) so I can walk along and get the same data you are getting.

When you click on the button shown below...

image

You get a window with 2 steps. I assume you already have the data in your copy buffer and went straight to the "Update BD Checklist..." button.

Is this what you did?

Did you specify a Location Name first back on the Report Designer Location field?

If so, what location did you specify exactly?

Let's start here. I am sure we can figure this out and get you going.

Thanks

Hi Gary,

I went ahead and did a test with a sample location of a small hotspot here in MX, named Guamuchil.

  1. I loaded the bar chart from eBird for that location.
  2. I selected all text on that page and pressed Ctrl+C to put it in the copy buffer.
  3. Then I went back to the Report Designer, Checklist Tab in BD.
  4. Entered the name of Guamuchil into the Location field.
  5. Clicked on the Yellow Button
  6. And it all worked.

See video below.

Let me know what happens when you do this please.

Take care.

Hi Jeff, Yes I did all the steps you described in you first reply. Here is the URL for the text i copied.

https://ebird.org/printableList?regionCode=IN-UP&yr=all&m=

I've used these ebird printable checklists before and they've always worked.

This morning I deleted my old BD ver 6.0 and reinstalled 6.1 fresh from the download. Still have the same problem?

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the details and screenshots. It always helps make the job of figuring this out easier.

I would bet that you do NOT have anything in your Windows Copy/Paste Buffer!

Easy to check. Before you click on the Step #2 button to add names from your Paste buffer to the BD checklist, open a simple text editor, such as NotePad or Word, etc. Now paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of your buffer into that editor.

Do you see anything? Show me a screenshot of that?

Do you have any complex copy/paste buffer 3rd party applications installed on your PC that could be interfering with normal use of your Windows Copy/Paste Buffer?

Let me know.

And just as a test. I had no problem with the eBird printable URL link you gave me. It worked just fine.

We are getting closer.

I don't have any third party copy paste apps on my WIndows 11 PC. And I tested the copy buffer. I pasted before and after trying the BD buffer and it pasted the full contents of the checklist both times into onenote and notepad.

Thanks for the details Gary.

Very strange indeed. It is working for me on Windows 11 and BD 6.1 (build 28), but not for you.

I think it is time for me to get onto your computer and have a look at this.

I am around most of tomorrow. Please send me an email to Support@BirdersDiary.com and let's arrange a time.

Thanks again.

Update: Got onto Gary's computer today. For some reason, this functionality available from the Checklist Report window is always picking his Amphibian taxonomy (alphabetically first in his list of taxonomies) to import names against. So it finds none. I am digging into the code to see why this might happen.

I did give him a workaround, as this same functionality exists on the File | Import/Export... Checklists Tab window.

More after I figure out the problem with the Checklist Report functionality.

An update for Gary. Try as I may on 3 different computers, each with an Amphibians taxonomy, I can't get it to fail as we did on Gary's computer. It works as expected each time.

This might be a multi-threaded issue on Gary's computer. It was quite fast with lots of memory. The taxonomy might not be getting set before the code attempts to read from the dropdown on Gary's computer. Very strange.

Still digging...

Ok - This was day one code, not sure why it would stop working on Gary's computer, but I think I know what is happening. In Build 12, I changed the code a bit to account for multi-threaded concurrency. Once we get Build 12 uploaded, Gary, please try it and see if it works now on a test location.

Thanks for your help.
