[Solved] New Hierarchical Location Lifer Report
This was generated from a Support Forum post here.
This is meant to replace the existing Hierarchical report found in the Report Designer, Special Reports Tab, All Locations Summary template.
Initially, let's get some requirements for a simple Hierarchical report design/feature.
The old report used to generate something like this...
Any new reports are not going to use this old Report Builder, but will instead generate an HTML/CSS report viewable in your default web browser on your PC (e.g. Edge, Chrome, Firefox, etc.).
At a minimum, this report will require the following inputs from the user:
- Taxonomy (e.g. ABA, Clements, etc.)
- Start Location (e.g. World)
- Number of levels to descend from starting location (increases complexity and time to generate report)
The report will generate a Location hierarchy similar to the layout in the previous report (see attachment above). Any ideas on how to better format it?
So, Let me here your requirements and preferences for such a report. Let's keep it simple and functional for starters. I don't get a lot of questions/use for this report, so probably not worth a complicated interface requiring weeks of development.
Ok, 7 hours later, we have a working report. It is very fast and formatted almost exactly the same.
I am going to release this in Build 18 for others to play with.
This is only one feature/part of the Report Designer Special Reports Tab. But, probably the most used one. So we shall start here. Let me know what needs to change, improve or be added to this report, and we will go from here.
I will add others as users chime in with other issues on this Special Reports tab.
v6.1 Build 18 is now available. It has this new report functionality in it.
Just select the Special Reports Tab in the Report Designer (F7), and you will be prompted to use this new report.
All existing functionality still exists as it was and has been for some time on this Tab.
I should have answered your initial post with something along the lines of "the eBird style would make a good starting point" but your solution is much more advanced. One minor improvement would be to produce an html file, as with the complicated taxonomy report (detailed species list), i.e. fixing the initial number of levels at 1 or 2 and allowing the user to click on entries to expand them. Would this be feasible?
My big problem at the moment, of course, is that you have (understandably) released the "new" report only in V6.1, which makes it unavailable to us dinosaurs who are still running 6.0. Given that upgrading the program is a real headache (you know what it entails), I shall wait until the next upgrade of the taxonomic lists forces me to carry my PC downstairs and connect it to the wicked internet. Or are there enough 6.0 users still out there to make it worth including the report in this version as well?
All the best,
Completely forgot bout your isolated computer and upgrade hurdles. Unfortunately, going back and upgrading 6.0 with this new feature is not in the cards. I have never had the ability to fix past versions with the technology I am using for BD. Let me know how I can help get you to v6.1.
This report is indeed an HTML file now, like the other report you reference. I will look into making the rows expandable.
Thanks and keep the ideas coming.
All clear. I expected you to say that but thought it was worth asking.
I shall upgrade to 6.1 - there is now a reason to do so - but it will be a pain and I'm sure I'll need your help. I'm sure you still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about how you managed to install 6.0 on my system. Let's wait until the new tax lists are available: you deserve some time off over Christmas.
All the best,
Ha ha Graham. The new tax lists won't be out until next Fall, Oct/Nov 2024.
Maybe after Christmas. 😉
