- V6.3 Build 26 – 18-Apr-2026
- Bold new changes in BD development!
- BD source code management has been moved to the popular online GitHub repository. I had personally managed changes and version history on my own computers for 31 years. Time to adopt the industry standard. The repository remains private, but is now securely managed in the cloud.
- I have also been using ChatGPT extensively since its release, and it has become very capable for programming over the past 2–3 years. With the move to GitHub, I have now connected OpenAI’s programming AI, CodeX, to the entire BD source library. I used it extensively over the last month to solve several BD problems. It has proven to be remarkably powerful and accurate.
- v6.3.26 is the first BD release developed using GitHub and CodeX. A significant milestone after 31 years of development.
- Fixed continuing issues with the Song JukeBox functionality in BD. The issues arise from a massive overhaul at Xeno-Canto in their API, new access rules, and changes in file structure and use policies.
- Generating the HTML report from the Sightings View and Edit window always attached all associated Trip photos; but it ignored the photo-rating that the user applied – those only being applied to Sightings photos/attachments. This has been corrected now. Only Trip photos/attachments that meet the rating criteria will be included.
- Updated the SQL results window to show elapsed query time more clearly along with formatted row counts.
- Bold new changes in BD development!
- V6.3 Build 25 – 15-Mar-2026
- Xeno-Canto.org updated their Web Song API to v3 recently. That broke the Song/JukeBox feature in Birder’s Diary Desktop and Mobile. It required a large rewrite to get it working again. I am happy to say that this feature is working once again.
- The updated Name Matching feature for adding All Name matches between eBird and Avilist was added in v6.3.23. The algorithm has been updated to provide a better and more complete set of name matches; ignoring all subspecies sightings. Be sure to Update the list of names using this new feature if you used this before.
- Go to “File | Import/Export”, “Sightings” Tab
Click on the “Name Matching on Import” button.
Click on the “Add All Name Matches” button on the name matching window.
Choose “Yes” when prompted to clear the list of names first.
- Go to “File | Import/Export”, “Sightings” Tab
- V6.3 Build 24 – 7-Mar-2026
- A major update/rewrite to correct issues stemming from importing Location Names from eBird checklists. The common UTF-8 characters used for location names are not translated and used properly in BD. Many changes here:
- Upon first updating to Build 24 this will happen…
- All location names will be normalized to a valid Ansi character set (e.g. ö becomes o instead of a non-printable poorly functioning character). Instead of seeing garbage characters in location names, you will see valid printable characters.
- In some cases, your database may have duplicate names where you once manually corrected a location name and then imported it again. These locations will have the text “[DUP id]” added to the end of their name and you can locate them in the Location Maintenance window by searching on those letters.
- The design of the locations table was updated to include propert indexes and properties more in line with use in v6.3.
- Any changes will be logged to your BD6324.log file in C:\Birder’s Diary\. Review that log file and search for “NormalizeAndFinalizeLocationNames” to review any changes made. You don’t need to do this, but that info is there if you want. You will see records for each change on one line at a time; the old location name followed by the normalized location name. For example,
“2729 Sabanas de Coclé–Sur de Antón Sabanas de Coclé–Sur de Antón”
- When importing eBird checklists with such names in the future, those names will be normalized up front.
- When double-clicking on an Outing in the recent Outings grid on the main window that had a bad location name, it would not properly set the location. This is corrected.
- Upon first updating to Build 24 this will happen…
- The Charts functionality had a few problems with refreshing; hiding the charts pane incorrectly; editing and updating charts. This has all been fixed.
- Fixed a bug introduced recently affecting the Ctrl+PLUS/MINUS on the Sightings View and Edit window. It is now working again.
- On upgrade, make sure the Things table is properly indexed. Found at least one customer database with a problem here. If this problem is found, you will be notified. The problem will be fixed but I would like to hear about it.
- A major update/rewrite to correct issues stemming from importing Location Names from eBird checklists. The common UTF-8 characters used for location names are not translated and used properly in BD. Many changes here:
- v6.3 Build 23 – 23-Feb-2026
- A new feature/button has been added to the newly enhanced Name Matching dialog.
The Name Matching dialog is available when importing sightings from other sources (e.g. eBird) or exporting to eBird.
With the new AviList 2025 taxonomy, many names are still not exactly matching between eBird and Avilist 2025.
This is usually just added/removed hyphens, common spelling differences (e.g. Gray vs Grey), etc. etc.
The Name Matching dialog allows you to setup Name Matching between Avilist common names and eBird common names for purposes of importing/exporting to/from eBird and Birder’s Diary.
But it can be tedious to keep adding new name match pairs when you have a lot of them from a recent trip.
A new button has been added to the Name Matching dialog that, when clicked, will add 99% of all possible Name Matches to your database. It will never have to be done again.
Access the Name Matching dialog from “File | Import/Export…”, Sightings Tab, Name Matching on Import button.
- A new feature/button has been added to the newly enhanced Name Matching dialog.
- v6.3 Build 22 – 22-Feb-2026
- Setting the Background Report text color on the “View | Options; Background Tab” dialog will also affect the Lifer Bars text color.
- Before starting a backup, BD will now check to make sure you have enough space on both the source drive and the destination drive before proceeding. It will let you know if you do not have enough.
- A bug that occurred in the last couple months due to a change in MS Windows, caused lots of issues with View/Edit, the Quick Search bar, and double-clicking on the Outings grid. Many attempts have been made to fix this over the last couple releases. It should now be fixed in all cases.
- V6.3 Build 21 – 6-Feb-2026
- Before starting a backup, the program checks to see that the specified destination drive and directory exist, and that the specified filename is valid.
- When attempting to exit the Sightings Documents window without assigning a rating, the message did not properly set the focus to the Ok button.
- Fixed problem when double-clicking on the Outings grid in the main window caused the Sightings View Filter window to malfunction.
- V6.3 Build 18, 19 & 20 – 26-Jan-2026
- After a year of many issues with a new background worker process, I have removed that new feature. I keep all of the database upgrade processing in the main program, but optimized it greatly.
- eBird species and location data is no longer auto-updated. Before it was auto-updated once per year in the background worker process. Now there are buttons to update that data manually from the eBird World Search window and the Options Dialog | Special Tab. This is a manual process that you can so if needed. It will take 7-20 minutes depending on internet and computer speed.
- Some major optimizations to database upgrade code; reducing time to complete the process by 70% in most cases. In some cases correcting code that did not perform exactly as intended.
- A few minor optimizations to various code.
- Fixed a new bug with the Search Sightings by Name feature in the main window toolbar. It was producing errors due to a new Windows update and a change in how asynchronous functions execute.
- Corrected proper clearing of Search Sightings by Name feature in some cases.
- Fixed Report date issues on some non-US/English calendar formats.
- After a year of many issues with a new background worker process, I have removed that new feature. I keep all of the database upgrade processing in the main program, but optimized it greatly.

-
Fixed a rare Reconcile issue where some sightings could be skipped under specific, previously unidentified conditions.
Taxonomy handling
-
Things marked as extinct in the Clements or AviList taxonomies are no longer removed from thing-to-checklist mapping automatically. E.g. Just because the Tasman Sea Island Thrush is extinct, it is still linked to Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in BD.
-
Fixed an issue during Reconcile that could cause duplicate sightings when species were lumped across taxonomies. Sightings are now handled correctly without duplication.
Bug fixes
-
Fixed a problem in Duplicate Sightings where the scrollbar could stop responding.
-
Fixed a display issue in the View & Edit Sightings window where the sort arrow in column headers could appear in the wrong position.
-
Corrected an issue in HTML Sightings Reports where trip information was missing for parent trips without direct sightings.
Reporting and performance
-
Added file size information to the upload window for HTML Sightings Reports.
-
Improved image compression and overall speed for HTML Sightings Reports.

- If using Clone or Edit features on Sightings View/Edit, updates and positioning of grid/table after Clone/Edit is smoother and more accurate.
- Added ChatGPT/Gemini AI features to the Reconcile Wizard. When wondering what happened and what to do with a split/lump/deletion/etc during reconciliation, you can have the Reconcile Window ask ChatGPT or Gemini, and get detailed information about any change.
- You can have a continued discussion about range, etc.
- You can customize the Prompt passed to the AI agent to get exactly the information you are interested in. Buttons and instructions are provided on the Reconcile window.
- The formatting of the Genus/Species range/description window (accessible from “Features | Rosetta | Lookup | Double-click Selection”; among many other ways to get here) has changed. It is much more functional, including links to many different sites for each taxon. This information comes from the import of the new AviList 2025 taxonomy. This information is also displayed during the Reconcile process.

- When double-clicking on the Latest Outings Grid on the main window, it would bring up the View Sightings Setup window with parameters preset to match the Outing that was double-clicked on. In addition, it would clear the selected Taxonomy Lists and add back those require to list all species for the Outing. It no longer clears the list first, retaining all checked lists from the last use.
- Trim common and scientific names when export to eBird import file.
